Travel insurance

Travel insurance for an East Jakarta trip

Not checked at the border, but private hospitals ask for payment or a guarantee before treatment. Here is what your policy should cover.

The short answer

Why insurance is worth it in Jakarta

As of October 2026, Indonesia does not ask visitors for proof of travel insurance at immigration, whether you arrive visa-free, on a visa on arrival or an e-VOA. Indonesia's financial regulator (OJK) said in January 2026 that it supports making cover mandatory for foreign tourists, so check the latest entry rules before you fly.

The practical case is stronger than the legal one. Foreign visitors cannot use Indonesia's public BPJS health scheme, and the private hospitals most travellers end up in typically ask for a deposit, payment or an insurer's guarantee before admitting you. A few nights in hospital with tests, or a medical evacuation, can run into thousands of dollars. Add Jakarta's rainy season (roughly October to April), when flooding and storms delay flights and roads, and a policy that pays for missed connections and extra hotel nights starts to look cheap.

What to check in the policy wording

Travel insurance FAQ

Is travel insurance mandatory for Indonesia?

Not as of October 2026: immigration does not ask for proof of insurance. The financial regulator OJK has said it supports making it compulsory for foreign tourists, so check the current rules shortly before you travel.

Can foreigners use public healthcare in Jakarta?

Short-term visitors are not covered by Indonesia's BPJS national health insurance and pay for treatment themselves. Private hospitals usually want a deposit, payment or an insurer's guarantee before admission.

Am I covered on a Gojek or Grab motorbike?

It depends on your policy. Many cover you as a passenger if you wear a helmet, but some exclude motorbikes entirely, and riding one yourself usually requires a licence valid for motorcycles. Check the wording before you rely on ojek rides.

Which hospital should I go to in East Jakarta?

For private care, RS Premier Jatinegara and RS Hermina Jatinegara are central options; RSUP Persahabatan in Rawamangun and RS Polri in Kramat Jati are large public hospitals; Eka Hospital serves Cibubur. Call your insurer's assistance line first if you can.

Does insurance cover flight delays in the rainy season?

Most comprehensive policies pay a fixed amount after a set delay and may cover missed connections and extra accommodation. Weather is usually a covered reason, but only if you bought the policy before the storm or disruption was announced.
