Airport transfers
Getting from Jakarta's airports to East Jakarta
Soekarno-Hatta or Halim, train or taxi: the honest trade-offs, with times and fares checked October 2026.
First, which airport?
Halim is next door; Soekarno-Hatta is across the city
Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP) sits inside East Jakarta, a short ride from Halim and Cawang, Taman Mini and Jatinegara. If your airline flies there, take it: the transfer is usually 15 to 30 minutes and any Grab, Gojek or Bluebird will do.
Most international flights land at Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) in Tangerang, on the far western side of the metropolis. From there East Jakarta is roughly 40 to 55 km by toll road, which means anything from 45 minutes at 5am to two hours or more in the evening rush or a tropical downpour. That distance is why choosing the right transfer matters more here than in most cities.
CGK to East Jakarta: every option compared
| Option | Typical cost | Door to door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private transfer | Fixed quote agreed in advance; usually above a metered taxi, tolls often included | 1–2 hrs (road) | Night arrivals, families, groups, lots of luggage |
| Grab / Gojek car | App fare, roughly Rp200,000–350,000+ to East Jakarta, plus tolls and parking; surges at peak | 1–2 hrs | Solo travellers or couples with a local data plan |
| Bluebird taxi | Metered, plus tolls and an airport surcharge; roughly Rp250,000–350,000 to Cawang or TMII off-peak | 1–2 hrs | No app, no booking, still want a trusted car |
| DAMRI airport bus | Rp80,000 (Rawamangun, Halim), Rp90,000 (Pulo Gebang), Rp95,000 (Kampung Rambutan) | 1.5–2.5 hrs incl. last leg | Budget travellers staying near a bus terminal |
| Airport train + KRL or LRT | Rp70,000 to Manggarai or BNI City, then a few thousand rupiah on KRL/LRT | About 1.5–2 hrs, traffic-proof | Light packers arriving at peak hour |

The options in more detail
Pre-booked private transfer
A driver meets you in arrivals with a name board, the price is fixed before you fly and there is no queue, no haggling and no surge. It is the option we recommend for first-timers, for anyone landing after 10pm and for families heading to Cibubur or Pasar Rebo, where the drive is longest.
Grab or Gojek
Both run official airport pick-up zones at CGK and Halim; follow the in-app pick-up instructions, because the points move. The app shows the fare up front, but tolls and parking are added. You need working data on landing, so set up an eSIM before you fly.
Bluebird taxi
Use the official Bluebird counter or queue at the terminal kerb and ignore anyone offering a "taxi" inside the arrivals hall. Cars are metered; check the meter is running, and expect to cover tolls and the airport surcharge on top.
DAMRI bus
DAMRI runs coaches from all three terminals to Rawamangun, Pulo Gebang, Kampung Rambutan and the Halim high-speed rail station. Airport departures run roughly 06:00–23:00 on the Rawamangun and Kampung Rambutan routes. From the terminal you still need a short Grab or taxi to your hotel.
Airport train, then KRL or LRT
The Commuter Line Basoetta links CGK with BNI City (Sudirman) and Manggarai. Since 10 September 2026 it runs a reduced timetable, roughly every two hours from the airport (06:27 to 22:27), so check the Access by KAI app. From Manggarai, KRL commuter trains reach Jatinegara in minutes; from BNI City walk to LRT Dukuh Atas for Cawang, Halim, TMII and Cibubur.

Typical road times to East Jakarta areas
| Area | From Halim (HLP) | From Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) |
|---|---|---|
| Halim & Cawang | 10–20 min | 45–90 min |
| Taman Mini & Cipayung | 15–25 min | 50–100 min |
| Jatinegara / Matraman | 20–30 min | 50–100 min |
| Rawamangun & Pulomas | 25–40 min | 50–100 min |
| Cakung / Duren Sawit | 25–40 min | 60–110 min |
| Cibubur | 30–45 min | 60–120 min |
Our estimates for normal weekday traffic; weekday rush hours (about 06:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00) and heavy rain can stretch the upper figure further.
Arrival tips that save time and money
- Avoid the evening crawl A 5pm landing at CGK can mean a long ride; the train is worth it if you travel light
- Have data before the doors open Ride-hailing, driver messages and maps all need it
- Carry some small notes Tolls and parking are often settled with the driver
- Rainy season is October to April Add buffer time, especially for a departure flight
- Book the return too Hotel-to-CGK in the morning peak needs 2–3 hours' margin

Airport transfer FAQ
How long does it take from Soekarno-Hatta to East Jakarta?
By road, usually about 45 to 90 minutes to Cawang, TMII or Jatinegara outside rush hour, and up to two hours or more at peak times or in heavy rain. The airport train plus KRL or LRT takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours but is not affected by traffic.
Is Halim or Soekarno-Hatta better for East Jakarta?
Halim is far closer: it is inside East Jakarta and most areas are 15 to 40 minutes away. Soekarno-Hatta handles most international flights, so many visitors have no choice, but if a domestic connection lands at Halim, take it.
How much is a taxi from CGK to TMII or Cawang?
Expect roughly Rp250,000–350,000 on the Bluebird meter outside peak hours, plus tolls and the airport surcharge. Grab and Gojek are often similar or a little cheaper but surge at busy times. These are estimates checked October 2026.
Can I take the airport train to East Jakarta?
Yes, partly. The airport train runs to Manggarai and BNI City (Rp70,000 on the official airport page, checked October 2026). From Manggarai take a KRL train to Jatinegara; from BNI City walk to LRT Dukuh Atas for Cawang, Halim, TMII or Cibubur. The timetable was cut to about one train every two hours from 10 September 2026.
Is a pre-booked transfer worth it?
For late arrivals, families, groups and anyone with heavy bags, yes: you get a fixed price, a driver waiting in arrivals and no queue. For a solo traveller arriving at midday with data on their phone, Grab or Bluebird is usually cheaper.
