Pasar Induk Kramat Jati
Pasar Induk Kramat Jati is the 'mother market' that feeds Jakarta: a 24-hour wholesale hub for fruit, vegetables and spices on Jl. Raya Bogor, where trucks from West Java unload through the night. It is not a souvenir market, but for photographers and food lovers it is one of the most vivid sights in the city.

History
Opened in 1973 and run by Perumda Pasar Jaya, the market covers about 14.7 hectares and acts as a price barometer for produce across Indonesia. Small traders from across Greater Jakarta buy here in bulk and resell in neighbourhood markets. In December 2025 a fire destroyed around 350 kiosks in the fruit section, which has been under renovation.
What to see
Mountains of chillies, shallots, potatoes and citrus, porters balancing loads, and spice stalls selling wet ground bumbu and harder-to-find rempah. Supplies arrive from West Java overnight, while vegetables keep coming from about 09:00 into the afternoon. Retail buyers, caterers and small traders typically shop between about 05:00 and 08:00.
Tips
Wear closed shoes, as floors are wet and lanes are busy with carts. Most sellers trade in bulk (think kilos, not single pieces), so ask before buying. Keep valuables close and step aside for porters. Before Ramadan and other holidays the market is especially crowded.
Getting there
TransJakarta Corridor 7 (Kampung Melayu–Kampung Rambutan) stops at Pasar Induk on Jl. Raya Bogor. Condet, with its Arab-Indonesian restaurants, is a short ride west; see our Kramat Jati & Condet guide.
