Staying connected
Indonesia eSIM or local SIM for East Jakarta?
Land with working data for Grab, maps and messages, without falling foul of Indonesia's phone (IMEI) rules.
Why it matters here
In Jakarta, your phone is your transport ticket
East Jakarta runs on apps. Grab and Gojek are how most visitors get from Halim to Taman Mini or from Jatinegara to dinner, QRIS payments are everywhere from malls to warungs, and hotels and drivers often message on WhatsApp. Arriving at Soekarno-Hatta without data means queuing for a SIM before you can even book a ride.
You have three ways to get online: a travel eSIM bought before you fly, a local SIM or eSIM from Telkomsel, Indosat or XL at the airport, or your home operator's roaming. For most visits of a few days to a few weeks, the first is the least hassle; the second is the cheapest per gigabyte if you do not mind a counter and some paperwork.
Travel eSIM vs local SIM vs roaming
| Travel eSIM | Local tourist SIM/eSIM | Home roaming | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you buy | Online, before you fly | Operator counters at CGK, GraPARI stores, official outlets | Nothing to buy |
| Typical price | Small packs from a few US dollars; 10–20 GB plans cost more than local SIMs | Telkomsel tourist pack Rp150,000 for 25 GB, 30 days (official price) | Often the most expensive per GB |
| Passport check | No | Yes, passport registration at the counter | No |
| IMEI rules | Not affected | Fine for up to 90 days via the operator | Not affected |
| Local phone number | Usually data only | Yes, useful for drivers and restaurants | Your home number |
| Best for | Short stays, arriving at night, dual-SIM phones | Longer stays, heavy data use, needing a +62 number | Very short stopovers |
Prices checked October 2026 on telkomsel.com; airport kiosks may sell different, often pricier bundles. Your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible for an eSIM.
The rule visitors trip over
IMEI registration, explained simply
- Travel eSIM or home roaming foreign network
- No registration needed
- Local SIM, stay up to 90 days registered at an operator outlet
- No customs registration
- Local SIM, stay over 90 days long-stay visitors
- Register IMEI with Customs
- Why the rule exists Since 2020 Indonesia blocks unregistered foreign handsets on local networks to curb grey-market phones
- Short visits Buy the SIM at an official counter with your passport; the operator handles the temporary access
- Long stays Declare the phone on arrival via Customs (Bea Cukai); up to two devices per person, and tax may apply above the exemption
- After 90 days An unregistered phone loses access to local networks, so plan ahead if you are staying on

Coverage and data in East Jakarta
Coverage
All three big networks cover East Jakarta well on 4G, from Rawamangun to Cibubur. Expect weaker indoor signal deep inside large buildings and some museum halls at TMII, and patchier service out on the Thousand Islands or in Puncak.
How much data?
- Light: maps, Grab, messages, 1 GB per 3–4 days
- Typical: plus social media and photos, 1 GB a day
- Heavy: video calls, streaming, hotspot, 2–3 GB a day
Wi-Fi as backup
Hotels, malls such as AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City and many cafés offer Wi-Fi, but sign-ups often need a local number. Do not rely on it for booking rides on the street.

eSIM FAQ
Do tourists need to register their phone's IMEI in Indonesia?
Not for a normal holiday. A travel eSIM or home roaming is not affected at all, and a local SIM bought at an official operator outlet works for up to 90 days without registering with Customs. Stays longer than 90 days on a local SIM require IMEI registration with Customs (Bea Cukai). Checked October 2026.
Can I buy a SIM card at Soekarno-Hatta airport?
Yes. Telkomsel and other operators have counters and resellers in the arrivals areas. Bring your passport and an unlocked phone. Airport bundles can cost more than Telkomsel's official tourist pack of Rp150,000 for 25 GB.
Which network is best in East Jakarta?
Telkomsel, Indosat and XL all work well across East Jakarta on 4G. Telkomsel has the widest reach outside the city, which helps on day trips to Bogor, Puncak or the islands.
Will an eSIM work with Grab, Gojek and WhatsApp?
Yes. Ride-hailing and messaging apps work on data. If an app asks for a local number for verification, a local SIM is the simpler route; many visitors keep their home SIM for SMS codes and use the eSIM for data.
How much data do I need for a week in Jakarta?
Around 5–7 GB covers maps, rides, messaging and moderate social media for a week. Pick 10 GB or more if you make video calls or use your phone as a hotspot.
