Day Trips from East Jakarta: Bogor, Bandung, Islands and More

Five day trips from East Jakarta: Bogor's botanic garden by KRL, Bandung by Whoosh from Halim, the Thousand Islands, Puncak and Kota Tua, with 2026 fares.

· 8 min read

East Jakarta is a good launch pad.

East Jakarta sits where the city's escape routes begin. The Jagorawi toll road to Bogor and Puncak runs straight past Taman Mini and Cibubur. Halim, in the district, is the Jakarta terminus of the Whoosh high-speed train to Bandung. And Jatinegara station puts the KRL commuter network on your doorstep. That makes a day out of the city easier from here than from almost anywhere else in Jakarta.

Here are five trips that work in a day, with how to get there from East Jakarta. Fares and times were checked in October 2026; the high-speed train and boats use dynamic or operator pricing, so treat figures as a guide.

1. Bogor

Kebun Raya Bogor: the easiest escape, by train.

The Bogor Botanic Garden is one of the oldest in Asia, a huge green park of giant trees, lily ponds and lawns in the middle of Bogor. It is the classic Jakarta day trip, and it is cheap.

Getting there

From Jatinegara station, ride the KRL one stop to Manggarai and change to a Bogor-line train. From Manggarai to Bogor takes roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, and trains run frequently. The fare is distance-based, Rp3,000 for the first 25 km plus Rp1,000 for each further 10 km, so the whole trip costs well under Rp10,000 on a tap card. The garden's main gate is a short walk or ride from Bogor station. Avoid the commuter rush, roughly 06:00–08:00 heading into Jakarta and 16:00–20:00 heading out.

Tickets and hours

Entry is Rp15,500 on weekdays and Rp25,500 at weekends and on national holidays, the same for Indonesian and foreign visitors. It opens 08:00–16:00 on weekdays and 07:00–16:00 at weekends. Buy at the gate or at tiketkebunraya.id. Cars can park but cannot drive around inside. Bogor is famously wet, even outside the main rainy season, so bring an umbrella.

2. Bandung

Bandung by high-speed train, from your own district.

The Whoosh high-speed train leaves from KCIC Halim station in East Jakarta, which is also on LRT Jabodebek. On Monday to Saturday the first train to Tegalluar Summarecon leaves Halim at 06:25 and the last at 21:25, about every 25–30 minutes; Sunday runs to an adjusted timetable for maintenance. The ride to Tegalluar takes about 45–55 minutes, and Padalarang station connects with a free feeder train into Bandung station in the city centre.

Fares are dynamic. Premium Economy typically runs from about Rp150,000 to Rp300,000, with Business at about Rp450,000 and First at about Rp600,000. KCIC runs frequent promotions; book on the Whoosh app, at ticket.kcic.co.id or through travel apps. In Bandung, spend the day on Jl. Braga's colonial streets, the Gedung Sate area and the city's cafés, or join a tour to the volcano and tea country to the north.

3. Thousand Islands

Kepulauan Seribu: sea and sand in Jakarta's own waters.

The Thousand Islands stretch north from Jakarta Bay. Pari and Tidung are the popular choices for a long day, with white-sand beaches and calm water for snorkelling; the nearer islands, such as Bidadari and Untung Jawa, are shorter hops.

Getting there

The piers are in North Jakarta, about an hour or more from East Jakarta by car, and boats leave early, so book a car or driver for a pre-dawn start. Private speedboats run from Marina Ancol, Sunda Kelapa and Baywalk Pluit depending on the operator; recent reports say some services have moved away from Marina Ancol during construction work there, so confirm your pier when you book. Expect roughly Rp200,000–235,000 one way to Pari or Tidung and Rp155,000–175,000 to the near islands, with weekend fares higher. If you leave from Marina Ancol, the Ancol gate fee is extra.

The cheapest option is the city's Dishub fast boats from Kali Adem, Muara Angke, at about Rp44,000–74,000, bookable through the JaketBoat app. Their timings suit island residents and overnight stays better than day trips, so check the return time before relying on them. Sea conditions can cancel sailings in bad weather.

4. Puncak

Tea plantations and cool air, if you time the traffic.

Puncak, the mountain pass beyond Bogor, is where Jakarta goes for tea estates, cooler air and roadside corn. From East Jakarta you join the Jagorawi toll road near TMII or Cibubur and head south past Bogor to Ciawi and Gadog.

Go on a weekday if you can. At weekends and on holidays, police run a one-way system on Jl. Raya Puncak: roughly 07:00–11:30 uphill only and 12:00–18:00 downhill only, adjusted to traffic on the day, and an odd-even number-plate rule is applied on some weekends. Leave East Jakarta by about 06:00 to be uphill before it switches, and plan to come down in the afternoon window. A car with a driver takes the stress out of it; compare options on our car hire page.

5. Kota Tua and central Jakarta

The old city, a train ride away.

Kota Tua, Batavia's old town, centres on Fatahillah Square and the Jakarta History Museum in the 18th-century city hall. From Jatinegara, take the KRL to Manggarai and change for a train to Jakarta Kota station, a few minutes' walk from the square; check the KAI Commuter app for the current service pattern. TransJakarta Corridor 1 also ends at Kota.

The Kota Tua museums close on Mondays. The Jakarta History Museum opens 09:00–15:00 Tuesday to Friday and 09:00–20:00 at weekends, with tickets of Rp10,000 on weekdays and Rp15,000 at weekends for Indonesian adults and Rp50,000 for foreign visitors. Combine it with Monas and the Istiqlal Mosque, or with Glodok, Jakarta's Chinatown, for food. A guided city tour covers all of it in one go.
