Three Days in East Jakarta: A Day-by-Day Itinerary

A three-day East Jakarta itinerary: TMII at dawn, Lubang Buaya, Jatinegara's market and food, Rawamangun nights and a sunset ferris wheel. October 2026 prices.

Three days, three moods.

Three days is the right amount of time for East Jakarta. It gives you one full day for Taman Mini, one for history, markets and food, and one to choose your own ending: a ride on Indonesia's tallest ferris wheel, a quick trip into the old city, or simply a slow last morning in a park before your flight.

The plan below assumes you get around by Grab or Gojek, with the KRL commuter train where it helps. It keeps travel short by grouping sights that sit close together. Hours and prices were checked in October 2026; check again before you go, especially for anything closed on Mondays.

Day 1

Taman Mini, from dawn to the fountain show.

Morning: be at the gate early

Gate 3 at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah opens at 05:00, and the first hours are the coolest of the day. Entry is Rp25,000 on weekdays and Rp35,000 at weekends; buy online at tiket.tamanmini.com. The park is car-free inside, so use the free shuttles or join the free bike tour. Start with the cable car (Rp50,000 weekdays, Rp60,000 weekends, from 09:00), then walk the provincial pavilions, which open at 08:00 and are free once you are inside.

Afternoon: museums and animals in the heat

Save the indoor stops for midday. Good choices are the Transportation Museum (Rp10,000, closed Mondays), the Science Center PP-IPTEK (Rp27,500) and the zones of Jagat Satwa Nusantara, such as the Bird Park (Rp75,000 weekdays) or the Komodo Museum & Reptile Park (Rp65,000 weekdays). Lunch at Pasar Nusantara Sarinah, the food court inside the park, then visit the At-Tin Mosque, dressed modestly.

Evening: water and light

From Tuesday to Sunday, the free Tirta Cerita fountain show starts at 18:30, with a drone show at weekends. The park closes at 20:00. Sleep next door, at Oakwood or Santika, so the walk home is short. Our TMII one-day itinerary and museums guide have more detail.

Day 2

History in Cipayung, then a morning's worth of eating in Jatinegara.

Morning: Lubang Buaya

Lubang Buaya, in the same Cipayung district as TMII, is the site of the events of 30 September 1965. The memorial complex, Monumen Pancasila Sakti, and its museum open roughly 08:00–16:00, with entry around Rp5,000 in cash (closed Mondays). Arrive at opening and allow about 90 minutes. It is a serious, quiet place: dress modestly and take your time. Read our guide to visiting Lubang Buaya first.

Afternoon: Jatinegara market and food

Take a Grab north to Jatinegara, one of Jakarta's oldest trading quarters. Eat your way through lunch on our Jatinegara food trail (Bakmi Jackie closes at 15:30, so start there if you want it), then wander Pasar Jatinegara, the flea market at Jembatan Item and the gemstone stalls at Rawa Bening. Carry small cash and keep your phone in a front pocket in the crowds.

Evening: Rawamangun

Rawamangun, a short ride north-east, is a neighbourhood for noodles and sate. Bakso Bakwan Malang Cak Su Kumis is open until 21:00, Bakmi Golek on Jl. Paus Raya serves chicken noodles from about Rp30,000, and after dark Nasi Uduk OK sets up on the Jl. Paus pavement. See the Rawamangun & Pulomas guide and our Betawi food guide.

Day 3

Choose your ending.

Option A: a slow green morning

Walk the reservoir at Taman Waduk Ria Rio or head south to Cibubur's open space while the air is cool. See green escapes in East Jakarta.

Option B: Kota Tua by train

Take the KRL from Jatinegara, changing at Manggarai, to Jakarta Kota for Fatahillah Square and the Jakarta History Museum (closed Mondays; Rp10,000 weekdays and Rp15,000 weekends for Indonesians, Rp50,000 for foreign visitors). Details in our day trips guide.

Option C: shopping

PGC Cililitan for bargain clothing (about 10:00–21:00), or AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City in Cakung for a Japanese supermarket and food halls. See our shopping guide.

Afternoon into evening: the ferris wheel, or straight to Halim

If you are staying another night, finish at AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City in Cakung and ride the J-SKY Ferris Wheel as the sun sets: about Rp55,000 on weekdays and Rp66,000 at weekends, last tickets around 21:00. If you are flying out of Halim, eat soto Betawi at Soto Cawang, cooking since 1952, and you are minutes from the terminal. Leave extra time in the evening rush, or book a fixed-price car through our airport transfers page.
