The Best Museums in Taman Mini (TMII), After the Revamp

Which TMII museums are worth your time in October 2026: Museum Indonesia, Pusaka, Transportation, Komodo, Purna Bhakti Pertiwi and more, with prices and hours.

· 7 min read

Taman Mini is a museum district hiding inside a theme park.

Most people come to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) for the provincial pavilions and the cable car. Fewer realise the park holds well over a dozen museums, from textiles and heirloom daggers to steam locomotives and Komodo dragons. After the 2022–23 revitalisation the park reopened as a car-free green zone, several museums were refreshed (Museum Indonesia reopened in August 2023), and a few older attractions were repurposed. The result is uneven but rewarding: pick well and you get a superb rainy-afternoon programme.

This guide ranks the museums we think are worth your time, with prices and hours checked in October 2026. Every museum is ticketed or free on top of park entry (Rp25,000 on weekdays, Rp35,000 at weekends), and prices change with promotions, so treat the numbers as a guide.

The shortlist

Six museums worth planning around.

1. Museum Indonesia

If you only go inside one building, make it this one, close to the main entrance. Its three floors work as a key to the whole park: once you have seen the weaving, carving and ceremonial dress here, the pavilions outside make far more sense. Allow an hour.

2. Museum Pusaka

The heirloom museum is a short walk away and free with park entry. Its collection of kris and other blades is one of the best value hours in East Jakarta. The corridors are narrow, so large groups should go in waves.

3. Museum Transportasi

Run by the Ministry of Transportation, this sprawling site in the north of the park has locomotives, aircraft you can step into and boats. It is cheap and great with children, but mostly outdoors, so do it in the morning and skip it if the sky looks heavy. Closed on Mondays.

4. Museum Komodo & Reptile Park

Part of the Jagat Satwa Nusantara cluster with the Bird Park, Freshwater World, Insect World and a farmhouse. Bundle tickets are sold during promotions, so ask at the counter if you plan to see three or more.

5. Indonesia Science Center

The PP-IPTEK science centre is the best indoor stop for children under twelve. Pair it with Skyworld Indonesia, the large planetarium and space exhibition (about Rp90,000, closed on Fridays).

6. Museum Purna Bhakti Pertiwi

The cone-roofed museum of gifts to former President Suharto stands in its own grounds near the front of the park and is run by a private foundation, so hours and fees differ from TMII's own museums. Halls are sometimes hired for events; check before you go.

Also inside

Theatres, galleries and smaller collections.

Teater Keong Emas, the golden-snail dome once known as Jakarta's IMAX, still screens Indonesian nature and culture films on its giant screen (Regular Rp50,000, VIP Rp75,000, VVIP Rp100,000; showtimes vary). It no longer runs Hollywood releases, so go for the format, not the programme. Next door, Taman Legenda Keong Emas is a children's park with a dinosaur ride.

Smaller stops include the Museum Batik Indonesia, the Hakka Museum, the Asmat Museum of Papuan carving, the Bayt Al-Qur'an & Museum Istiqlal, the Insect Museum & Butterfly Park and the Information Museum. Hours are mostly within 08:00–16:00 and fees small or free. The provincial pavilions themselves are free and open 08:00–16:00.

Plan it

How to string the museums together.

09:00 clear skies
Cable car, then Museum Transportasi or the Bird Park
11:00 early lunch
Pasar Nusantara food court before the 12:00 rush
12:30 heat and showers
Museum Indonesia, then Museum Pusaka
14:30 still indoors
Science Center, Komodo Museum or Keong Emas
Evening free
Tirta Cerita fountain show on the Plaza Promenade
  • Avoid Mondays Transportation and electricity museums close, as does Lubang Buaya nearby
  • Avoid Fridays for Skyworld It is closed every Friday
  • Use the free electric shuttles The park is car-free and distances run to kilometres
  • Go cashless, keep small notes Most counters take QR and cards; tiny fees are easier in cash
  • Dress for the At-Tin Mosque If you add it, cover shoulders and knees

For the full day, including the cable car and the provincial pavilions, follow our TMII one-day itinerary. Two kilometres away, Monumen Pancasila Sakti at Lubang Buaya adds a sobering piece of 20th-century history; read our Lubang Buaya guide. If rain is forecast, our rainy-season guide has more indoor ideas.
