Jatinegara Food Trail: 7 Legendary Stops

Seven Jatinegara food stops cooking for decades, from Ayam Goreng Ibu Haji (1948) to Bakmi Lorong inside the market, with tips on timing, cash and the KRL.

Jatinegara has been feeding Jakarta for generations.

Jatinegara is one of Jakarta's oldest trading quarters, known as Meester Cornelis or Bali Mester in colonial times. Today its sprawling traditional market sits right next to Jatinegara KRL station, and the streets around it are full of stalls and shops that have been cooking for decades. The oldest stop on this trail opened in 1948.

Here are seven places for a morning of eating. Start inside the market with noodles, then work outwards. You will not manage all seven in one go, so share plates and pace yourself.

01

Since 1970

Bakmi Lorong

Start inside Pasar Jatinegara itself. Bakmi Lorong has served market noodles here since 1970, which makes it the natural first bowl of the day.

02

09:00–15:30

Bakmi Jackie

  • ~Rp25,000 a bowl

A second noodle stop, at Jl. Pintu Pasar Tengah 18. It opens at 09:00 and closes at 15:30, so this one has to be a morning or early-afternoon visit.

03

Since the 1950s

Toko Roti Gelora

An old-school bakery that has been baking since the 1950s. Pick up something sweet to break up the savoury stops.

04

Jl. Bekasi I

Rawon Manten

Dark, spiced beef rawon, with pisang goreng (fried banana) on the side. One of the most distinctive bowls in the area.

05

Since 1948

Ayam Goreng Ibu Haji

The oldest stop on the trail: family-recipe fried chicken, cooked in Jatinegara since 1948.

06

Since 1973

Ayam Goreng Mat Lengket

In Jatinegara Kaum: kampung fried chicken served with Betawi nasi uduk, rice cooked in coconut milk. Order the two together.

07

Since the 1960s

Sate Keroncong

Finish with sate near the market at Sate Keroncong, grilling since the 1960s.

Before you go

Go before lunch, carry cash, and take the train.

  • Go before lunch Beat the lunchtime rush, and catch Bakmi Jackie before it closes at 15:30
  • Carry small cash Warungs and market stalls run on cash
  • Take the KRL to Jatinegara station Commuter trains stop right next to the market
  • Pack an umbrella October–April is rainy season

Make a morning of the market too.

Between stops, browse Jatinegara Market's famous flea market (pasar loak), the bird market and the gemstone (batu akik) stalls, and find the Jatinegara heroes' statue. For more places to eat in Cawang and Rawamangun, see our East Jakarta food guide.

To start early, stay on Matraman Raya, a short hop from the market.
