Betawi Food in East Jakarta: What to Eat and Where

A guide to Betawi food in East Jakarta: soto Betawi, gabus pucung, nasi uduk, kerak telor, asinan and dodol, with warungs from Cawang to Rawamangun and Condet.

· 7 min read

Jakarta's own cooking, and East Jakarta is a good place to find it.

The Betawi are Jakarta's native people, descendants of the mixed communities that grew up around old Batavia, and their cooking shows it: Malay, Javanese, Sundanese, Chinese, Arab and Dutch influences folded into coconut-rich soups, sour-sweet salads and sticky festival snacks. Padang and Javanese restaurants far outnumber Betawi ones across the capital, so it pays to know where to look. East Jakarta is one of the best places to start. Condet, in Kramat Jati, was designated a Betawi heritage area back in 1974, and the older neighbourhoods of Jatinegara, Cawang and Rawamangun still have warungs that have been cooking for decades.

Here are the dishes to try and the places we would go. Prices below were reported in 2025 and early 2026; expect a little more in October 2026, and bring cash for the smaller warungs.

The dishes

Eight Betawi classics to order.

Kerak telorGlutinous rice and egg cooked into a crisp crust over charcoal, topped with toasted coconut (serundeng) and dried shrimpRecognised as national intangible cultural heritage in 2014
Asinan BetawiPickled vegetables or fruit in a spicy, sour peanut-chilli dressingRefreshing on a hot afternoon
Pecak bandengFried milkfish under a fiery chilli-and-peanut sauceOften on the same menus as gabus pucung
Dodol BetawiDense, chewy toffee of glutinous rice, coconut milk and palm sugar, stirred for hoursA classic edible souvenir
Bir pletokA non-alcoholic spiced drink of ginger, lemongrass and secang wood"Bir" in name only; halal and warming

Soto Betawi

Four bowls worth crossing the district for.

Soto Cawang

Since 1952 Cawang

Tucked into a bus parking area on Jl. Mayjen Sutoyo No. 3, this legend serves its soto on a plate rather than in a bowl, with coconut milk cooked over a wood fire. Around Rp45,000 a portion in 2025; open roughly 08:00–20:00.

Soto Betawi Rawamangun

Milk broth Rawamangun

A homely restaurant styled like a Betawi house at Jl. Tenggiri 18A, serving a pale, light milk-based broth with meat or offal. From about Rp25,000; open around 10:00–18:00.

Soto Betawi Condet Bang Iman

Condet

At Jl. Batu Ampar 3 No. 19 in Kramat Jati, known for a slightly reddish broth and generous meat. About Rp30,000; open roughly 10:00–21:30. Combine it with a Condet stroll.

Soto Sapi Ni'mat Betawi

Kampung Melayu

A small warung at Jl. Jatinegara Timur 133A, near the Kampung Melayu TransJakarta stop. About Rp26,000, or Rp32,000 with rice; open around 08:00–18:00, busiest at breakfast and lunch.

Beyond soto

Gabus pucung, nasi uduk, asinan and dodol.

Warung Mak Dower, Rawamangun

On Jl. Pemuda, this is our pick for a proper Betawi lunch: gabus pucung, pecak bandeng, fried snakehead with genjer and oncom, sayur asem and a famously hot sambal, in a room styled like a traditional Betawi house. Reported hours are about 10:00–22:00.

Ayam Goreng Mat Lengket, Jatinegara Kaum

Cooking since 1973: kampung fried chicken with Betawi nasi uduk. Order the two together. It is one stop on our Jatinegara food trail.

Asinan Betawi H. Mansur, Rawamangun

Also known as Asinan Sayur Kamboja, at Jl. Taman Kamboja No. 10. Choose vegetable or fruit asinan; both come sharp, sweet and spicy.

Dodol Betawi Hj. Mamas, Condet

A long-running dodol maker at Jl. Batu Ampar I No. 42, open around 07:00–20:00. Buy a small box to take home; it keeps well.

Kerak telor

Where to find Jakarta's street-food icon.

Kerak telor is cooked to order by roving vendors with a charcoal brazier and a shoulder pole, so it has no fixed address. In East Jakarta your best bet is Taman Mini, where vendors work around the park and especially near the DKI Jakarta pavilion (Anjungan DKI Jakarta), Jakarta's own pavilion, with exhibitions on Betawi culture. Watch the cook flip the wok upside down over the coals to crisp the top; that is how you know it is made the traditional way.

Elsewhere in Jakarta, kerak telor appears at Monas, Kota Tua and above all at the Jakarta Fair (PRJ) around the city's anniversary in June.

Condet

Make a morning of Jakarta's Betawi heritage area.

Condet sits on the Ciliwung in Kramat Jati and still feels more village than city in places. Besides soto and dodol, look for the Kampung Pengrajin Budaya Condet on Jl. Al Magfiroh, a small crafts kampung where households make Betawi cakes such as kue bakar and gemblong, and the Toko Oleh-oleh Condet souvenir shop at Jl. Condet Raya No. 7 (open about 09:00–22:00). Avoid riverside lanes after heavy rain; see our rainy-season guide.

Eat well

Practical tips.

  • Go early Soto warungs are busiest at breakfast and lunch, and the best cuts sell out
  • Carry small cash QRIS is spreading, but many warungs still prefer notes
  • Say if you avoid offal "Tanpa jeroan" means without innards
  • Ask about spice "Tidak pedas" means not spicy; Mak Dower's sambal is hot
Soto Betawi per portion

Nasi uduk set
Usually under Rp50,000
