Shopping in East Jakarta: Markets and Malls

Where to shop in East Jakarta: Pasar Jatinegara, Jembatan Item flea market, PGC Cililitan, AEON Mall JGC, Arion Mall, Pasar Induk Kramat Jati and Mal Cijantung.

· 7 min read

Old markets and big malls, a short ride apart.

East Jakarta shops two ways. In Jatinegara and Kramat Jati you find some of the city's oldest and busiest traditional markets: cloth by the metre, gold, gemstones, second-hand treasures and mountains of fruit. Elsewhere, air-conditioned malls range from the bargain floors of PGC Cililitan to the Japanese-run AEON Mall in Cakung, with Indonesia's tallest ferris wheel on its roof.

Here is where to go, what each place is good for and when to visit. Hours were checked in October 2026 and can change on public holidays and during Ramadan.

Jatinegara

The old trading quarter: cloth, gold, gems and junk.

Pasar Jatinegara, on Jl. Jatinegara Barat right by Jatinegara KRL station, is one of Jakarta's oldest markets, trading since colonial times when the area was called Meester Cornelis. It is strong on fabric sold by the metre, including batik, plus clothing, prayer mats, kitchenware and a long run of gold jewellery shops. If you buy gold, ask the karat and the per-gram price, and compare a few shops before you commit.

Jembatan Item flea market

A few minutes' walk away on Jl. Bekasi Barat III, the Jembatan Item flea market (pasar loak) is a treasure hunt of old phones, watches, cassettes, coins, porcelain, paintings and car parts. Traders work from about 04:00 to 18:00; go in the morning, when it is cooler, and expect to bargain. Weekends are liveliest.

Rawa Bening gemstones

The Jakarta Gems Center at Rawa Bening, on Jl. Bekasi Barat across from the station, is the city's best-known batu akik market, with stones, rings and on-the-spot setting. Ordinary stones are inexpensive; rare ones run into millions of rupiah, so ask for a lab certificate on anything costly.

Birds, pets and ornamental fish

The bird and pet market on Jl. Kemuning Mede is noisy and fascinating to walk through, and an ornamental-fish market sets up overnight near Lapangan Urip Sumoharjo. They are best enjoyed as sights rather than shopping stops for visitors.

Combine the morning with lunch on our Jatinegara food trail, and carry small cash: most stalls do not take cards.

Kramat Jati

Bargain fashion and the mother of all produce markets.

PGC Cililitan

Pusat Grosir Cililitan opened in 2004 on the site of the old Cililitan bus terminal and is a multi-floor wholesale-style centre for clothing, shoes, accessories and phone gear at low prices. It opens 10:00–21:00 and is linked to the Cililitan TransJakarta stop via a bridge from the second floor. Western sizes are limited. favehotel PGC Cililitan is right next door.

Pasar Induk Kramat Jati

On Jl. Raya Bogor, this is Jakarta's main wholesale fruit and vegetable market, with around 2,000 kiosks and trucks unloading around the clock. Sellers deal in bulk (often 5 kg and up), so come for the spectacle, ideally before dawn when supplies arrive, rather than for souvenirs. Part of the fruit section was damaged by a fire in December 2025 and has been under repair. See our Pasar Induk guide.

Malls

Cool air, food courts and a 69-metre view.

AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City

In Cakung, opened in 2017 with more than 200 tenants. The draws are the AEON supermarket's Japanese groceries, the Gourmet Garden food court on the third floor, a CGV cinema and the J-SKY Ferris Wheel (about Rp55,000 on weekdays, Rp66,000 at weekends). Open 10:00–22:00. More in our AEON Mall guide.

Arion Mall

Open since 1990 on Jl. Pemuda in Rawamangun, near the Rawamangun bus terminal. A five-floor, everyday mall with a supermarket, food outlets and a cinema; its own channels list hours of about 09:30–21:30.

Mal Cijantung

Opened in 1998, one of the oldest malls in the south of the district, in Pasar Rebo. Useful if you are staying towards Cibubur.

Plan the day

Make shopping part of the trip.

A good shopping day starts in Jatinegara at 08:00, breaks for noodles, moves to PGC after lunch and ends with sunset on the ferris wheel at AEON. Stay close to the markets and you cut the travel: Juno Jatinegara is on Matraman Raya, and favehotel sits beside PGC. Prefer a guide to help you navigate and bargain? See our tours page.
