East Jakarta on a Budget: Costs and Money-Saving Tips

What East Jakarta costs in October 2026: daily budgets in rupiah, cheap eats, budget hotels from about Rp300,000, train and bus fares, and the best free things.

· 7 min read

East Jakarta is one of the cheapest parts of the capital to explore.

Away from the malls and hotels of the city centre, East Jakarta runs on warung prices. A plate of rice with two sides can still cost less than a coffee back home, the commuter train is a few thousand rupiah, and the district's headline sight, Taman Mini, charges Rp25,000 to get in on a weekday. Where money goes quickly is ride-hailing in rush hour and the separately ticketed attractions inside the parks.

All figures below were checked in October 2026 and are rounded. Prices change, promotions come and go, and rupiah amounts are per person unless we say otherwise.

Daily budgets

What a day costs, in rupiah.

ItemShoestringComfortable
Bed (per room, per night)Rp300,000–400,000, budget hotelRp500,000–950,000, pool hotel
Food (three meals and drinks)Rp75,000–120,000, warungsRp150,000–250,000, warungs plus a restaurant
Getting aroundRp15,000–40,000, train and busRp100,000–200,000, mostly Grab/Gojek cars
SightsRp25,000–50,000Rp100,000–250,000
Total per dayAbout Rp450,000–600,000 (solo, own room)About Rp850,000–1,650,000

Sharing a room brings the shoestring figure down fast. These are estimates from current fares, ticket prices and hotel rates, not a quote; your spending will depend on how much you ride and what you eat.

Getting around

Public transport is the biggest saving.

ModeFare (October 2026)Useful for
TransJakarta busRp3,500 flat; Rp2,000 from 05:00 to 07:00Cawang, Cililitan (PGC), Matraman, Rawamangun
KRL commuter trainRp3,000 for the first 25 km, then Rp1,000 per 10 kmJatinegara, Manggarai, and on to Bogor or Kota
LRT JabodebekRp5,000 plus Rp700/km; capped at Rp10,000 off-peak, Rp20,000 at peakTMII, Kampung Rambutan, Cawang, Halim
LRT JakartaFlat Rp5,000 (transitional fare)Pulomas, Velodrome, Rawamangun, Matraman to Manggarai
Grab/Gojek motorbikeRoughly Rp10,000–25,000 for 5 kmShort hops, solo travellers
Grab/Gojek carRoughly Rp25,000–40,000 for 5 km off-peak; much more in rush hour or rainGroups, luggage, children

The trains and buses are cashless. Buy a KMT card at a KRL station or use a bank e-money card, and top it up as you go. Within Jakarta, TransJakarta, the MRT and LRT Jakarta share an integrated fare capped at Rp10,000 for journeys of up to three hours. The city's governor has said TransJakarta fares will be adjusted from 1 January 2027, so expect the bus fare above to rise next year.

The LRT Jakarta extension from Velodrome through Rawamangun to Manggarai opened in September 2026 on a temporary flat fare; check the current price before you rely on it. For routes and tips, read East Jakarta public transport.

Cheap eats

Eat where Jakarta eats.

Warteg

Point at what you want behind the glass. A simple plate of rice, vegetables and tempe can still be about Rp10,000; with chicken or beef, expect roughly Rp15,000–35,000.

Noodles in Jatinegara and Rawamangun

Bakmi Jackie in Jatinegara is around Rp25,000 a bowl; Bakmi Golek in Rawamangun starts at about Rp30,000. See the Jatinegara food trail.

Street breakfasts

Nasi uduk, bubur ayam and nasi goreng from carts and stalls usually come in around Rp15,000–35,000. Iced sweet tea (es teh manis) is a few thousand rupiah.

Food courts

Pasar Nusantara Sarinah inside TMII and the mall food courts at PGC and Arion are air-conditioned, mid-priced and easy to order from. More in our food guide and Betawi food guide.

Watch TMII's official Instagram for promotion days: it is offering 50% off entry and vehicle tickets on 17 October 2026, for example. Weekdays are cheaper than weekends almost everywhere.

Sample day

A shoestring day that still feels full.

Here is how a frugal day can look. Breakfast is nasi uduk from a street stall for about Rp20,000. Take the LRT Jabodebek to TMII station for a few thousand rupiah, pay Rp25,000 weekday entry, walk the free pavilions, ride the free shuttle and catch the free fountain show. Lunch at a warteg near the park for about Rp20,000. In the late afternoon, ride a motorbike taxi to Rawamangun and finish with a bowl of bakmi for around Rp30,000. That is a full day for well under Rp150,000 before your bed.

Spend smart

Where it is worth paying a little more.

A few costs save you more than they cost. An eSIM means you can book rides and check fares from the moment you land, without hunting for a SIM counter. Travel insurance matters in a city where a private hospital visit is expensive. And a fixed-price transfer from Soekarno-Hatta can beat a surge-priced ride in the evening rush. See our eSIM, travel insurance and airport transfer guides.

  • Ride in the middle of the day; rush-hour and rain surges can double a fare.
  • Pick a hotel near the sights you care most about, so you are not paying to cross the district twice a day.
  • Carry small notes for warungs and markets; Rp100,000 notes can be hard to break at stalls.
