East Jakarta with Kids: A Family Guide

East Jakarta with children: TMII's bird park, Komodo museum and cable car, Cibubur's open space, the AEON ferris wheel and family hotels, checked October 2026.

· 7 min read

East Jakarta is the family side of the city.

If you are travelling with children, East Jakarta is the easiest part of the capital to enjoy. It has the city's biggest family day out, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), plus green space at Cibubur, air-conditioned malls for rainy afternoons, and a cluster of family-friendly hotels with pools a short walk from the park gates.

The trick with kids in Jakarta is the same as for adults, only more so: start early, plan indoor stops for the hot middle of the day, and keep journeys short. Everything below was checked in October 2026; prices and hours change, so confirm on the day.

The big one

A day at Taman Mini, planned around the children.

TMII is car-free inside, which is a gift with small children. You park at the edge, then ride the free shuttles, join the free bike tour or walk. Park entry is Rp25,000 per person on weekdays and Rp35,000 at weekends, and Gate 3 opens at 05:00. Almost every attraction inside is ticketed separately, so the real cost of the day depends on what you pick. For the full layout, see our TMII one-day itinerary.

Prices are from TMII's official ticket page, checked October 2026. Jagat Satwa Nusantara runs bundle promotions from time to time, so look at its own ticket page before buying each zone separately. The free evening Tirta Cerita fountain show runs at 18:30 from Tuesday to Sunday, with a drone show at weekends, and is a lovely way to end the day if the children still have energy.

What about Snow Bay and Taman Legenda?

Older guides still list the Snow Bay waterpark. It does not appear on TMII's current official ticket list, and Indonesian reports say it closed in 2020 and the site was repurposed during the park's revitalisation, so do not plan a day around it. Taman Legenda Keong Emas, the dinosaur-themed play park, appears to be operating, with recent listings showing roughly 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 09:00–17:00 at weekends; its prices vary, so check its social channels first. The Indonesian Children's Palace (Istana Anak-Anak) is currently closed, though you can picnic on the lawns around it.

Green space

Cibubur and the parks: room to run.

At the southern edge of the district, Bumi Perkemahan Cibubur, the national scout campground, and the Wiladatika recreation park are where Jakarta families go for space and fresh air at weekends. They suit a slower morning: bring a picnic, a ball and plenty of water. Closer to the centre, our guide to green escapes in East Jakarta covers city parks such as Taman Waduk Ria Rio and the Cilangkap agro-tourism park.

Go early. From around 10:00 the heat builds fast, and from October to April afternoon downpours are common, so have an indoor fallback ready.

Rainy-day plan

Malls with something for children.

AEON Mall Jakarta Garden City

In Cakung, open about 10:00–22:00, with a Japanese supermarket, food courts, a cinema and the J-SKY Ferris Wheel on the third floor: 69 metres up and billed as Indonesia's tallest. Rides cost about Rp55,000 on weekdays and Rp66,000 at weekends, with family cabins for up to six from about Rp330,000; children under 90 cm ride free (checked October 2026). See our AEON Mall guide.

Arion Mall, Rawamangun

A long-running neighbourhood mall on Jl. Pemuda with a supermarket, food stalls and a cinema. Easy for an hour out of the heat if you are staying in Rawamangun or Pulomas.

Tamini Square and the TMII side

Next to Taman Mini in Cipayung, handy for a cool lunch or supplies before an afternoon back in the park.

For more on what each mall sells, see our East Jakarta shopping guide.

Family hotels

Stay next to the park, with a pool.

With children, the best base is one that keeps the first journey of the day short. Oakwood is about a five-minute walk from TMII and has an outdoor pool; Hotel Ciputra Cibubur suits a green-space weekend; Novotel Pulo Mas is a full-service option near Rawamangun's restaurants. For more options by neighbourhood, see where to stay in East Jakarta.
